Glennallen is 200 miles from Anchorage and can be reached by seasonal bus service or auto on a paved highway. Road access into the central portion is via the Chitina-McCarthy road. Road access into the northern portion is from Slana into Nabesna, a privately owned, abandoned mining community. The interior portions of the Park/Preserve are accessed by charter air service from Gulkana and Tok airports. The southern coastal portion and beaches can be accessed from Valdez, Cordova, and Yakutat by air. WHEN TO VISIT The Park/Preserve never closes. Peak visitor month is August. Climate: January, -30 to 29 degrees F; July, 45 to 61 degrees F. Precipitation: January, 6.1; July, 6.2. Weather conditions may delay scheduled air pickups. July has the warmest weather; however August is more mosquito free. Winters are cold. POINTS OF INTEREST The "Mountain kingdom of North America," is a day's drive east of Anchorage where the Chugach, Wrangell, and St. Elias mountain ranges converge. The Park/Preserve includes the continent's largest assemblage of glaciers and most peaks above 16,000 feet, including Mount St. Elias. At 18,008 feet it is the second highest peak in the U.S. Adjacent to Canada's Kluane National Park, the site is characterized by its remote mountains, valleys, and wild rivers, all rich in wildlife. ACTIVITIES Visitor Center; guides for hire; backcountry use; primitive camping; hiking; mountain climbing; horseback riding; boating and boat rental; fishing; hunting; off-road vehicle trail; snowmobile route; cross-country skiing. GENERAL INFORMATION Roads are passable to conventional vehicles with good ground clearance, but changing road conditions can make the roads passable only to 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Check locally for conditions and services. Lodging, meals, and supplies are available in surrounding communities. Remote cabins scattered throughout the region will accommodate backcountry parties. State campgrounds are located along the major highways. Visitors to the Park/Preserve should be self-sufficient and carry enough supplies in case of delays caused by bad weather. The nearest medical facilities are in Glennallen. Hiking trails are primitive, contact the Park Office for information.
